Children who are exposed to gun violence in the media are more likely to take up arms themselves one day. This is the finding of a study by JAMA Network Open ( HERE ) open access journal published by the American Medical Association ( HERE )

“If a child does not have a good life at home or in another community and experiences violence in the media, four consequences can occur.”

Suriyadeo Tripathi from the Moral Promotion Center at Mahidol University ( HERE )

Violence and social norms

According to experts, children who are depressed and vulnerable are always ready to repeat what they saw on the screen. Some would be paranoid and feel that society is not safe. It is said that if children experience violence in the media for a long time, they get the feeling that this is the social norm. Eventually they lose their compassion.

Tripathi says news media should largely avoid detail in crime reporting. Unlike contributions that could be classified as unsuitable for children, news programs are accessible to everyone. Due to the prevalence of violence in mass media, Tripathi emphasizes the importance of involving parents in their children's media literacy.

Parents should ask their children three questions about the media they consume instead of telling them what to believe:

  1. “How do you feel when you watch this type of content?”
  2. “What have you learned from this type of content?”
  3. “What would you do if you were in this situation?”

Fatal consequences for children

“As research from the National Institute of Mental Health ( HERE ) shows, some children want to copy media violence. Some are vulnerable to other media influences, some become fearful and many become desensitized.”

Ted Baehr, CEO Movieguide ( HERE )

According to Ted Baehr, founder of Movieguide, an organization that promotes Christian media content.

“Just as an alcoholic would be unduly tempted by a beer commercial, certain types of media can tempt or influence your child at his or her specific developmental stage.”
