After a fire in the monkey house in Krefeld on New Year's Eve ( we reported ), the cause of the fire has now probably been clarified.

Yesterday, several people reported to the Krefeld police who were suspected possible causes of the fire The results of the investigation so far were announced at a press conference today (January 2, 2020 at 12 p.m.).

The fire was probably lit by so-called sky lanterns, which are forbidden. According to the police, the perpetrators are a 60-year-old Krefeld woman and her two adult daughters. They ordered the lanterns online, thinking they would be allowed on New Year's Eve. They volunteered at a police station, deeply regret it and now fear reprisals.

The public prosecutor's office is now investigating the three Krefeld women for negligent arson. The police have no doubts about the description that they are actually the ones who caused the major fire.

“For us, this crime has been largely clarified” – Gerd Hoppmann from the Krefeld criminal police.

Call for donations

In a Facebook posting, the zoo is asking for donations. There it reads:

The chimpanzees Bally and Limbo miraculously survived the devastating fire. They are only slightly injured and are now housed in two boxes in the gorilla garden. They are looked after by several zoo veterinarians.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the overwhelming wave of compassion and offers of help that reach us on all channels. This supports our employees. We also thank you for your solidarity on social networks. We read everything but don't manage to respond yet.

At the moment, active help at the scene of the fire is not possible because the house is in danger of collapsing and has been cordoned off as a crime scene by fire experts and the police.

We are grateful for donations of any amount. Keeping great apes will continue to be a focus for us in the future and we will build a new house.

If you would like to donate, here are our donation accounts.
