The claim
The construction board with the inscription “Zossener Strasse 156. We are building accommodation for refugees. A new building with 42 apartments is being built here!” was subsequently edited!
Our conclusion
Rating: Wrong! The construction board is real and was put up by GESOBAU AG to provide information about the construction of the building
In this day and age when disinformation and hoaxes are easily spread online, an alert user sent us a picture of a construction board to review. It stood at Zossener Straße 156 and announced the construction of 41 apartments for refugees. Although some skeptical users suspected that the construction plaque was fake, we did some research and can confirm: the construction plaque is real, and the story behind it is remarkably inspiring.
It is this photo of a construction board with the inscription: “Zossener Strasse 156. We are building accommodation for refugees. A new building with 42 apartments is being built here!”

Claim 1: The construction board is a fake
Rating: False
The construction board is real and was put up by GESOBAU AG to provide information about the construction of the building. We confirmed this by contacting GESOBAU AG directly and through further research.
Claim 2: The apartments are only temporary
Rating: Partially correct
The building was constructed using a modular design, which means that it can be flexibly adapted to different needs. If the need for accommodation for refugees decreases, the apartments can be converted into regular living space. However, they are built to have a normal lifespan for new construction and not just to serve as temporary accommodation.
Claim 3: Only 41 apartments were built
Rating: Correct
According to our research and confirmation from GESOBAU AG, 41 apartments were actually built in the building, offering space for around 200 people.
Claim 4: GESOBAU AG carried out the project alone
Rating: False
Although GESOBAU AG is the client, many other actors were involved in this project. The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) is responsible for the operation and use of the building, while the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office supports the integration of the residents.
The discussions on the Internet: A heated debate
As is often the case when it comes to topics relating to refugees, the news about the new building at Zossener Straße 156 sparks heated discussions online. The construction board became the object of hatred and agitation. Lack of understanding and prejudice often characterize the public debate. The statement that refugees are housed in luxurious apartments while “our own people” live on the streets is often used to generate outrage.
But this comparison ignores a central problem. The housing shortage that exists in Berlin and other German cities is not due to the reception of refugees, but rather to a lack of affordable housing that has developed over many years. It is a structural problem that affects all segments of the population and should not be reduced to individual groups.
The dominant phenomenon here is that of scapegoat politics. It is an easy and convenient solution to shift complex problems onto a specific group rather than addressing the deep-rooted structural problems that are truly responsible for the housing crisis. It is important that we as a society recognize such strategies and strive to maintain an objective, fact-based perspective on the situation. This is the only way we can find and advance constructive solutions.
In detail:
If you look at Zossener Straße 156 in Berlin-Hellersdorf, you will see a newly built, impressive building. It's a far cry from the normal concrete blocks you're used to. Here, GESOBAU AG has built a modular house for refugees - and we at Mimikama have decided to tell you the whole story behind it.
In recent years, the refugee crisis has become a central issue in Europe and especially in Germany. The Federal Republic has taken in thousands of people who have fled war, terror and persecution. Despite the significant challenges, authorities and civil society groups have struggled to provide dignified housing for these newcomers. An example of these efforts is the project at Zossener Straße 156 in Berlin-Hellersdorf, which was carried out by GESOBAU AG.
The Zossener Straße 156 project
This remarkable project started in spring 2020 and was completed in winter 2021/22. There were previously so-called “Tempohomes” on the site, which were used to provide faster and more flexible accommodation for refugees. But these are now history. Now a brand new modular building with 41 apartments is rising in its place, offering space for around 200 people.
A modular marvel
The special feature of this construction project lies in its modular design. This made it possible to build the new building in a short time and at the same time ensure a high level of flexibility in terms of the floor plans of the apartments. If there is less need for accommodation for refugees in the future, the apartments can easily be added to the regular housing market. It is a prime example of how sustainable construction and social responsibility can go hand in hand.
Partnership for success
The success of this project is due to the collaboration of various parties. On paper, GESOBAU AG is the client, but there were many other important players. The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) is responsible for the operation and use of the building.
And finally, the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office takes care of the integration of the residents. Francisco Jose Cardenas Ruiz and Susan Hermenau are the contacts for information on this topic.
Conclusion: The claims that the construction board is a fake and that GESOBAU AG carried out the project alone are false. The other claims are correct or partially correct. Our conclusion: The project at Zossener Straße 156 is a remarkable example of innovative housing solutions for refugees and shows what can be achieved when different actors work together.
