Mark Zuckerberg says that anyone who denies the existence of the Holocaust without the intention of causing harm or attacking anyone can post this false claim on Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg, head of Facebook and a Jew himself, finds Holocaust denial “deeply offensive,” but believes his company should not restrict the freedom of expression of Holocaust deniers and should automatically delete these posts as long as they do not do so out of an anti-Semitic stance , as he told the technology blog Recode in an interview.
Even after an objection that Holocaust denial is usually done with defamatory intent, he reiterates that it is difficult to question the intent because people often claim false things out of ignorance, including himself . As long as it is not intended to offend anyone, this statement can also be on his platform, even if others, including himself, feel offended by it.
This opinion receives great outrage. The civil rights organization Anti-Defamation League says Facebook has a “moral and ethical obligation” to ban the spread of such lies. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, senior member of the Wiesenthal Center, says Zuckerberg is “wrong” and Holocaust denial is classic “fake news.” In Germany and Austria, however, denying the Holocaust is a criminal offense. Facebook follows these laws and properly deletes any distribution of these lies in these two countries.
