In a comment, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. hc Paul Robert Vogt reviews the last year.

1 year of COVID-19: “ COVID-19 shows us that we are not above nature, but are part of nature. “Mother Nature” always has the upper hand and she uses all the amenities of the modern world to expand her reach. We spend billions on homeland security and counterterrorism to defend ourselves against human enemies. What terrorists couldn't achieve with all their capabilities, a small virus was able to do in just a few weeks: bring our modern lifestyle to a screeching halt. And the West fought COVID-19 with the methods of our grandparents - in the technologically connected world of the 21st century!

COVID-19 will accelerate science at all levels. The scientists have shown that in a global effort they are able to tackle a difficult problem in a coordinated manner and at great speed. The mRNA technology will also open up new horizons outside of infectious diseases.”

With these words Paul Robert Vogt begins the concluding remarks of his commentary. 1 year of Covid-19 has changed a lot. Not just in all of our lives, but also in politics, society and science.

In his commentary, Vogt also talks about common myths and explains that the labels “too fast,” “too unsafe,” “not tested,” and “mere human experiments” are unfairly spread. However, Vogt also criticizes the inadequate communication about vaccination. “In order to counter the widespread skepticism about vaccinations, the population would need to be adequately informed. “The mRNA technology didn’t come about in a few months,” he notes.

1 year of Covid-19 and many insights

““Living with the virus” brings with it ongoing uncertainty, new lockdowns, and makes it impossible to plan (companies, hotels, tourism, schools, families),” says Vogt. His stated best solution would be eradication, i.e. the extinction of the virus.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global problem. In his commentary, Vogt is of the opinion that (world) health organizations and governments should pursue an eradication strategy globally in the second year of the pandemic, which is likely to be successful with various components and with increasing vaccination success.

In his opinion, coordinated action would help today - and in the future - if a new pandemic with a different, perhaps even more dangerous pathogen comes our way. This is also why Vogt believes that naming the inadequacies in the management of this pandemic is necessary as constructive criticism.
