At first glance, 74-year-old Erramatti Mangayamma and her 80-year-old husband Yaramati Sitarama Rajarao from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh are a completely normal married couple.

On second glance, if Mangayamma's age is confirmed, she is the oldest mother in the world. She was delivered by cesarean section of two healthy girls. This is reported by the newspaper “ Times of India “.

Married since 1962, the couple repeatedly tried to have children and suffered greatly from unwanted childlessness. Various doctors and the use of spiritual practices could not help the couple. A year ago, the couple sought out fertility specialist Dr. Sanakkayala Umasankar in Guntur. He put together a 10-person team of cardiologists, gynecologists and pediatricians.

Artificial insemination

Although Mangayamma went through menopause decades ago, doctors started in-vitro fertilization after she was certified as physically and mentally healthy. Egg and sperm cells are brought together in a test tube. If fertilization is successful, the embryo is transplanted into the uterus.

At the ages of 74 and 80, the couple became parents of twins.
“We are the happiest couple in the world. We have our own children,” the husband said. Mother and children are doing well, according to doctors who will not comment further, citing confidentiality.

Medical miracle

The doctors are calling it a medical miracle.
Mangayamma is not the only one who becomes a mother at an advanced age. In 2015, the then 65-year-old Annegret Raunigk von Vierlingen was born. In 2008, the then 70-year-old Indian woman Omkari Panwar had twins. Despite the success and healthy parents and children, the question of whether artificial insemination should be carried out at such an old age remains controversial.
