A hand like this is usually only seen in films - but these images are neither manipulated nor from a sci-fi flick!

And were only recently shared again on Facebook. Because last year we received many inquiries about these photos:

The fact check

Let's recap the facts:

First of all, yes , the image at least appears to be real, as there is no evidence of manipulation to be found.

And yes, this deformity does exist, this phenomenon is called mirror hand or ulnar dimelia .

There are many deformities of the hand, the most common being so-called polydactyly or multifingeredness, i.e. hands with more than 5 fingers.

What we see here, however, is a so-called mirror hand, in which the hand is essentially mirrored in the middle without a thumb attached.

This is often associated with a malformation of the ulna. There are different degrees of these malformations. From a double ulna to two completely independent hands.

The mobility of the mirror hands is usually limited, but full mobility of the fingers is also possible. However, there are usually restrictions in the elbow joint due to the double ulna and also in the wrist and fingers themselves.

There seems to be full mobility of the hand and all fingers here.

Mirror hands also occur in connection with Laurin Sandrow syndrome

These malformations are congenital; the heritability and the genetic loci are not known in detail. However, it is likely that it is a disorder of embryonic development, with individual genes playing a secondary role.
