Go to Google, search for “the wizard of Oz” click on the red shoes, then the tornado.

The Wizard of Oz into Google can enjoy a nice Easter egg – we’ll explain to you how to find it for sure!

The term Easter Egg stands for a hidden peculiarity in media or computer programs and Google has come up with such a secret trick to mark the 80th anniversary of the popular classic children's book.

If you enter “The Wizard of Oz” into Google search, sparkling red shoes appear on the right side of the screen. If you tap or click on this nice animation, the website suddenly starts rotating and the view changes color.

Instead of the shoes you can now see a small tornado - this will take you back to the usual Google page.

The meaning behind the animation

Both the red shoes, the tornado and the sepia coloring of the website are an homage to the 1939 musical film.

Protagonist Dorothy and her dog Toto are swept into the magical land of Oz by a tornado. To return home, Dorothy must click the heels of the magical red shoes together.

Both the opening and closing scenes are toned in sepia - the rest of the film in between is in color. Why? Color photography was revolutionary at the time. Sepia represents Dorothy's original home, where she goes with the red shoes. That's why the screen turns sepia when you click on the red shoes and the tornado takes you "back" to the colored world.

The film is based on the book “The Wizard of Oz” by Lyman Frank Baum, which was published in 1900 and was first titled “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.
