The Japanese monk Hoshino Endo practices a very unusual form of asceticism. He runs every night on narrow, steep paths through the cedar forests of Mount Hiei. The 31-year-old is a marathon monk who has completed a total distance of more than 38,000 kilometers. The monk is looking for enlightenment. To grow beyond himself, to put aside his own desires, and at some point to be able to be there for others, that is the goal of his exertion. He blesses believers along his path. Hoshino Endo spends almost six hours on the road every night, of which he prays for at least one and a half hours: at temples, shrines, trees, stones, streams. There are 255 sacred places on Mount Hiei and each one has its own rules. Hoshino is currently in his fourth year of asceticism. If all goes well, he will be a saint in a few years.
