For example, on Facebook, providers specifically target low-income consumers. But instead of a loan, consumers usually only receive a prepaid credit card. High cash on delivery fees or invoices are due for this. Providers and internet addresses change frequently, but the mesh remains the same. Many consumers have already contacted the VZB about this.

Do not accept cash on delivery mail

“Anyone who has already ordered a supposed loan or credit card on such a site should not accept cash on delivery mail,”

advises Erk Schaarschmidt, financial expert at VZB.

The cash on delivery shipment contains neither the credit confirmation nor a real credit card. After paying a high cash on delivery fee to the delivery person, affected consumers discover that they have received a prepaid credit card. In contrast to a real credit card, you still have to load this card with credit.

contract revoked

“Anyone who has concluded such an opaque contract online with a prepaid card provider should definitely revoke it in order to protect themselves from further claims,”

adds the financial expert.

“In principle, consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal when ordering online.”

However: In consultations with the consumer advice center, consumers have recently reported that companies had not recognized the revocation. Allegedly, consumers waived their right of withdrawal during the ordering process.

“If providers question the right of withdrawal, we recommend that consumers seek legal advice,”

said Schaarschmidt.

Refugees are often affected

As coordinator of the refugee project at VZB, Laura Ströbel knows:

“People with a refugee background are often affected.”

For them, rip-off scams on the Internet are particularly difficult to recognize. When shopping online, consumers should take a look at the legal notice and read the terms and conditions carefully.

“If you need a prepaid credit card, you can also go to a local bank,”

recommends Ströbel.

Consumers who receive letters about supposedly concluded contracts for credit cards or credit brokers can contact the consumer advice center:
