The claim

Donald Trump claims Nikki Haley is ineligible to run for president because of her parents' non-American heritage.

Our conclusion

This claim is false. Nikki Haley was born in the USA and meets all the constitutional requirements to run for president, regardless of her parents' citizenship.

In politics there are always claims that say more about politicians' strategies than about the truth. An example of this is the recent false reports about Nikki Haley's eligibility.

Rumors/claims

Some conservative media platforms and Donald Trump himself have claimed that Nikki Haley, a prominent Republican challenger in the race for the 2024 presidential nomination, is ineligible due to her parents' foreign origins.

This claim is based on the assumption that only children of U.S. citizens are qualified to be president.

Evaluation

This claim ignores the basic rules of the US Constitution. According to Article 2, Section 1, any person born in the United States is qualified to serve as President. Haley's birthplace in South Carolina confirms her eligibility, regardless of her parents' citizenship.

The facts about Nikki Haley

In her autobiography “Can't Is Not an Option: My American Story,” Haley describes her family background. Her parents, natives of Sikh families in Punjab, India, initially decided to emigrate to Canada. Later, in 1969, they moved on to South Carolina, USA. Three years after arriving in the United States, Nikki Haley was born, giving her the right to run for the highest office in the state under the U.S. Constitution.

Nikki Haley was born in South Carolina in 1972 and automatically received US citizenship. The 14th Amendment underscores this by guaranteeing citizenship to all those born in the United States. The claims made by Trump and others misunderstand or ignore these clear constitutional provisions.

Conclusion

This type of misinformation is not new in US politics. Trump himself was a prominent proponent of the "birther" conspiracy theory against Barack Obama and expressed similar unfounded doubts about the electability of Kamala Harris. Such claims are often more about political maneuvering than about finding the truth.
