Internet users are increasingly receiving email messages informing them that their Apple ID in China has allegedly been used to access iCloud.

As our cooperation partner Watchlist-Internet reports, fraudsters are currently sending massive amounts of emails in the name of Apple. It claims that your Shanghai Apple ID was entered into a web browser to access their iCloud. If you have not logged in yourself in China and suspect an unauthorized person is behind it, you will be asked to take further steps and follow the link in the email. You should not comply with this because it is a phishing attempt and the criminal senders are trying to get your data.

What does the phishing email reveal?

There are some indications that the mail does not come from Apple itself and therefore cannot be trusted. For example, it is noticeable that you are not addressed by name, as would normally be the case with most such service emails. In addition, the message is sometimes difficult to understand and written in poor German. In addition, upper and lower case letters are sometimes omitted, which would also not occur in an authentic service email.

If you move your mouse cursor over the links in the email, the attempted fraud will be most visible because you will not be redirected to Apple itself, but to a completely different location. If you notice such behavior in an alleged service email, do not follow any links in the message. If you have already done this and end up on one of the linked pages, do not under any circumstances provide your data there.

Have you already announced your details?

If you have already provided your information, please try to renew your Apple Account credentials immediately and contact Apple Services to prevent any damage. If you have linked your credit card to your Apple account, be careful of unauthorized charges. If you notice unauthorized money transfers, contact your credit card provider and discuss how to proceed. A police report is also necessary.

The Internet Watchlist recommends:

Move the email to your spam folder and do not comply with the requests stated therein. Otherwise, you risk financial loss because fraudsters could use your account to make purchases and commit other crimes.
