Most of us have probably heard of fake Microsoft employees harassing people over the phone.

We report on this “Microsoft Support” scam almost every week. So nothing new, but the police only reported a few days ago that there would be an increase in these calls ( we reported ).

Today we received a lovely email about this topic. It was about exactly such a call. Such a call was recorded so that we can see directly how the fraudsters on the other end of the line become increasingly aggressive.

“Dear Mimikama team,

Some time ago you posted a post about fraudulent calls from alleged Microsoft employees who claimed that their own PC had been hacked.

A few days ago I received – for the umpteenth time – such a call and recorded it. I intentionally acted naively and tried the con artist's patience to the limit. You can feel his increasing irritation, but he still tries to remain friendly because he sees me as easy prey. In the end he gets really angry. ????

I don’t want to withhold this recording from you – have fun with it! Maybe you would like to post them on your site?”

“Micorosft Support” scam: How can I protect myself?

There are a few basic rules we can follow. These rules are:

  • Reputable companies like Microsoft do not contact their customers without being asked. If a service employee contacts you without you asking: simply hang up the receiver.
  • Under no circumstances should you give out private information, such as bank account or credit card details, or access details for customer accounts (e.g. PayPal).
  • Never give an unknown caller access to your computer, for example by installing remote maintenance software.
