Back to “go” Incorrect Windows update leads to problems with Outlook: Users have to take action themselves

Anyone who has noticed inexplicable changes in their outlook since yesterday need not be surprised. An update for the email program (KB3114409) provided by Microsoft on December 8, 2015 was incorrect and caused Outlook to only start in safe mode . As a result, numerous functions are not available.

The update affected Outlook 2010 32-bit and Outlook 2010 64-bit, which are used by many users.

All users who use these versions of Outlook and have their PC automatically carry out updates are likely to be affected by the incorrect update.

Every user can check this for their Outlook themselves: If the message “safe mode” can be found in brackets in the top line at the edge of the screen in the open Outlook window, the incorrect update has taken effect. You can find out how to fix the error in the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems here .

Windows itself provides information on how to resolve the error on its support page in English.

“Even though Microsoft is undoubtedly responsible for the error, this shows once again that users cannot blindly rely on the functionality of their software or the automatic update,” says Katja Henschler from the Saxony Consumer Center.

Of course, setting automatic updates is important so that security gaps are closed promptly. “Nevertheless, users are always subject to a pressure to control or to act when it comes to the functionality or security of their PC,” appeals Henschler.
