Fraud with fake Amazon calls is increasing rapidly! Service provider tellows warns of dangerous calls.

Scams involving callers misrepresenting themselves as Amazon employees or affiliates are on the rise. We've known this for years. Whether fake Microsoft employees, some “debt collection” companies or fake local courts, people are repeatedly scammed over the phone. And now increasingly with false “Amazon” calls, as tellows has found out.

The exciting thing from the service provider's study: 50 percent of all calls do not come from Amazon itself. It is expected that this proportion will continue to rise and that an increased amount of fraud will be recorded before Christmas. Therefore, tellows examines all reported Amazon telephone numbers in a unique study and categorizes them to protect those called.

Database of the study

In the published study, the consumer protection platform tellows analyzed calls attributed to Amazon. The numbers were collected on the basis of the entries that the users themselves left on tellows. Data from the last 365 days from around 250 telephone numbers with over 6,000 reviews were evaluated.

For the report, telephone numbers were examined between October 2020 and October 2021, which were searched and evaluated on tellows during that time. The phone numbers considered were categorized using the tellows score (1 - serious to 9 - dubious). This indicates the risk assessment of a telephone number. The higher the score, the more dubious the caller is. The number of reported phone numbers that were reported to tellows in connection with Amazon was examined. The number of total calls caused by the phone numbers was not analyzed.

The result: Every second call is not from Amazon!

Every second call to a phone number assigned by Amazon was perceived as annoying or dubious. These calls were not official Amazon calls. These negatively assessed telephone numbers come from Amazon partners as well as from pure fake or Scam callers.

Official Amazon employees only call from a few different phone numbers: nine percent of all reported phone numbers account for almost 50 percent of the call volume. Amazon partners call in connection with Amazon-related services, such as the Amazon credit card. These calls are not dubious, but are often perceived as annoying. 68 percent of all annoying Amazon calls are fake. At 68 percent, fake calls make up the majority of all calls perceived as annoying. In the study, the different methods used by criminals were analyzed and presented in detail. The methods are all aimed at obtaining the personal data of the person being called.

The tellows data shows an increase in numbers classified as undesirable over the last few years. One of various problems and scams: Fraud methods such as competitions with fake Amazon vouchers have increased significantly since then. However, traceability is problematic because the lifespan of individual fraud phone numbers is always very short.

Nevertheless, during the time that the numbers are active, a lot of people are contacted. Overall, a cycle can be seen from the evaluation: the calls take place in waves. The next wave is expected from October to December.

If Amazon calls you...it's probably fake!
When Amazon calls you... it's probably a fake!

Of course, it's actually a little logical at what times the waves hit. Due to the increased order volume during the Christmas season, user interest in phone numbers that are assigned to Amazon is also increasing. Contacts with official Amazon employees are increasing, for example for delivery queries.

And scammers shamelessly exploit this. They pose as Amazon employees and try, for example, to obtain sensitive customer data. However, we can remember:

Official Amazon employees always call with the same numbers!

These numbers are real!

However, Tellows also gives the green light for real phone numbers from Amazon. The most important telephone numbers are listed in the study. These are callbacks from customer service regarding order inquiries, which are usually made with +44 area codes.

What you should also remember: In general, these Amazon employees only call after prior request. It is not possible to call back official Amazon phone numbers.

Amazon delivery service drivers make further calls . All calls are made via the telephone number 03022957920.
