The claim

Social media users are excited about a mural in Naples that shows plus-size Amy Winehouse.

Our conclusion

The wall is actually in an alley in Naples. However, Amy Winehouse's photo was retouched into another photo. In the original picture, in which the wall painting is reminiscent of a portrait of saints, you can see two women.

Artists always amaze us with their creations in streets and on walls, as is the first impression of a painting by Amy Winehouse on a small wall in a narrow street in Naples.

The image is currently being shared on social media and is receiving tons of enthusiastic reactions, such as this posting on Facebook :

However, in some comments, users express their doubts. One user writes that he has been going to Naples for 15 years but has never seen this mural by Amy Winehouse.

Does the picture come from Naples?

Yes, this information is correct. The photo was taken in a side street on Via Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. We can see the wall via Google Maps and Streetview At least in the recordings from 2014, 2015 and 2022 we don't see Amy here.

Is this work of art real?

We went looking and found the “template” for it. This photo ( archived here ) can be found on Amy's Wikipedia entry It shows Amy Winehouse in 2007 at the Eurockéennes music festival in France, as the title tells us.

Okay, then the artist simply used this photo as a template? – Well, not quite. We also find another photo that shows exactly this alley and this wall. The user “Storvandre” published this photo on his Flickr account . However, there is no sign of Amy Winehouse here.

And the user Gino Scarpato on Facebook compared exactly this photo with the one that shows Amy Winehouse. He writes that this is a Photoshop fake:

MIMIKAMA

We take the liberty of taking a screenshot of his comparison and highlighting various anomalies:

Apart from the fact that it would be a huge coincidence if both photos with the different murals were taken in exactly the same perspective, lighting mood (ok, the Photoshop version is a little bit desaturated) and the same crop. – Also, the fact that the car is parked here in exactly the same way, and the time of day was probably exactly the same (see lights on), would be another extremely “coincidence”.

In addition to these details, there are other details that stand out. The “frame” with the saint’s image at the top of the wall should have had Amy’s face painted over it. In this case you would at least be able to see the structure, which would also cast small shadows depending on the light. The artist would probably have taken the trouble to first paint over the previous mural with the two women. But behind Amy you can still see parts of her robes flashing out.

Conclusion

Rating: FALSE

We agree with the user Gino Scarpato and judge this photo to be a “Photoshop fake”, as he already described it in his comparison.

The photo of the alley was taken in Naples. On January 25, 2014, as the photographer Storvande noted on his Flickr account. However, Amy Winehouse cannot be seen in his photo.

If you compare these two pictures, you can see that a photo of Amy was retouched into that of Storvandre.
