Calls from fake police officers are not new. But fraudsters are always coming up with new ways to trick their victims!

On Wednesday (May 5th) more calls from fake police officers were reported. A 72-year-old woman received the message that her personal information had been written down on a piece of paper that had been found by burglars. During the ongoing conversation, the senior citizen should comment on the state of her financial situation and what habits she has in everyday life. After a while she began to have doubts and hung up - and in doing so she did the right thing. The fraudster, who posed as a police officer, came away empty-handed.

Criminals often use different tricks to get their victims to hand over money and valuables. In the role of fake police officer, they abuse the trust that many older people have in this profession. To do this, they also use so-called call ID spoofing, where they can make 110 or any other number appear on the display as the supposedly calling number.

Police officers don't call 911!

The (real) police in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss are currently warning about a new variant: Some people reporting the complaint reported that they were shown “02131 3000” - the number that citizens in the Rhein-Kreis can contact if you want to contact the police beyond an acute emergency. Please note: It is now technically possible to falsify a caller ID. If a conversation seems strange to you, you can be suspicious! If you have any doubts, you can call your grandchildren, acquaintances or even the police yourself. You should definitely hang up beforehand! And dial the number you already know yourself.

As a general rule, the police will never ask you where your valuables and cash are stored and will want to “keep them safe” for you. Do not give out any personal information or your financial circumstances over the phone. In general, you should also inform the police if you feel suspicious about a call or if you have become a victim of fraud, either on 02131 300-0 or on the emergency number 110.
