Everyone knows the feeling when you walk through a cobweb. Personally, I'm already tingling as I write this article.

Imagine how this antelope feels with the big cobweb between its horns.

Are these pictures real?

Short and sweet: Yes, the pictures are real. They were given by Dr. Jess Isden taken during a safari through the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana. Dr. Jess Isden is a research fellow at the animal protection group WildCRU.

Wanting to know what kind of spider would make such a web, she shared the photos with the Facebook page “The spider club of southern Africa” ( see HERE ). Some readers of the post think that they are golden orb-web spiders.

Dr. Isden to the pictures

“At first I thought the gemsbok must have been walking through the webbing, but upon closer inspection it was clear it was much more complicated than that and there were live spiders in the webbing too. This has been seen in several animals. They could have easily wiped the cobwebs from their faces and horns, but they seemed to tolerate it. We also saw the same animal several times over 4 days with the net still intact!”

Conclusion:

Yes, the pictures are real. As can be seen in photographer Frank Solomon's photos ( see HERE ), it is not uncommon for spiders to make a home among an animal's horns or antlers. It is definitely “more comfortable” for the antelope; the annoying flies are simply eaten by the spiders.
