The attack is called "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" and is scheduled to take place between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on September 20th. Over 820,000 people have pledged on Facebook.

In mid-July, a Facebook posting by several initiators sparked a media frenzy. The posting called for people to storm a military base in the USA like “Naruto” – the main character of a Japanese manga series.

Call has now stopped

The event is called “Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us” and is scheduled to take place on September 20th between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Over 820,000 people confirmed the event via Facebook.

The original posting is no longer available, but contained the following text:

We'll all meet at the Area 51 Alien Center Tourist Attraction and then coordinate the attack. If we run like Naruto, we'll be faster than their bullets. Let's find aliens.

The Area 51 military base – also known as Homey Airport or Groom Lake – has been the subject of conspiracy theories for decades. Supposedly there are, among other things, aliens on the site, which are kept top secret.

However, co-initiator and video streamer Jackson Barnes soon explained that it was a joke and that the campaign was not meant seriously. The US Air Force, however, was not particularly amused:

“(Area 51) is an open training area for the U.S. Air Force and we discourage anyone from entering the area where we train American forces,”

the agency told the Washington Post.

PS: By the way, if you're wondering what this "Naruto Run" actually is and whether you can really dodge bullets with it... here's a nice video about whether this ninja running style actually helps you run faster:
