A woman from Plettenberg fell for a modern form of marriage fraud.

She fell in love with a Facebook acquaintance and transferred a six-figure sum to the alleged sales representative in Burkina Faso. The disaster began in April last year. The period of time shows that the “romance scammers”, as the modern term is used, can have staying power.

The man claimed he was from France but worked in Burkina Faso. The contact intensified. There was contact via all possible modern communication channels - but no personal contact. The visit to Germany did not take place. The rest of the process is strikingly similar to the fraudsters' usual procedures: The romance scammers suddenly find themselves in financial distress. In this case, the new lover reported that he was being detained by customs. The helpful woman from Plettenberg transferred money abroad several times. It was only this week that the woman filed a complaint.

Modern marriage scammers don't need to kiss their victims.

Today they are called “romance scammers” in modern German. They find their victims on social networks or online dating agencies. The right words, perhaps in chat or Skype, are enough: after a few days or weeks, the victim is wrapped around his finger.

Sometimes it helps to “google” the name of your chosen person – especially when making contacts abroad. Often the “romance scammers” don’t even bother to vary their names. Just being fluent in German doesn't guarantee that you won't fall victim to a scammer. Female scammers are quick to send photos in which they are scantily clad. Male scammers are more likely to use photos in uniform. They quickly talk about getting married. At the latest when the virtual acquaintance suddenly needs money, all alarm bells should ring. Then you should immediately break off all contacts, back up chat histories or email traffic and file a report.
