People on social media are unsettled: Did the Green Party's candidate for chancellor, Annalena Baerbock, demand that pet ownership should be banned?

Annalena Baerbock, the Green Party's candidate for chancellor, can be seen on a so-called sharepic. A text is also being distributed in which she supposedly talks about the end of pet ownership.

This text is about the CO2 emissions from pets and the fact that they are so large that private animal husbandry should be abolished. The text in full:

End of pet ownership

“We can save around 19 million tons of carbon dioxide in Germany just by eliminating dogs. This corresponds to almost as much CO2 as a car would release if it traveled 10,000 times around the world - almost 10% of road traffic. There are also cats, horses and many other animals. “Private animal husbandry must therefore come to an end, even if it comes through a CO2 tax on pets,” says Annalena Baerbock (39). [sic!]

Fact check “End of pet ownership” by Baerbock

First, let's keep things simple: Where does this statement come from? The Sharepic offers no clues as to where the information comes from. No sender information is provided. Only under the picture is the name Annalena Baerbock (Greens).

The next step would be search engine search. However, we cannot find any results using a search engine ( compare ). There are no media reports or indications that Baerbock made this statement.

Now, of course, there is a third possibility, because if she actually made such a statement publicly, it should be replicable. We therefore asked the Greens directly. We received a corresponding answer from press spokeswoman Nicola Kabel:

Dear Mr. Wolf, thank you for your message!

The quote is simply made up, Annalena Baerbock didn't say that.

Kind regards

What's behind it?

We are dealing with the classic so-called “green bashing” and the ban party narrative. For years we have seen that the Greens in particular have been accused of calling for all sorts of absurd bans ( barbecuing bans for Germans as an example ).

In connection with this narrative and also the bashing, topics that are highly emotional are repeatedly used. Children and of course pets are particularly popular. So if I accuse someone of banning pets, I'm creating an enemy image. And that is exactly what this false report is intended to achieve.

Through the constant repetition of this narrative, also with the support of false reports, these statements ultimately sound plausible. Even if they are wrong.

What's exciting, however, is that this discussion about pets actually existed. Bayerischer Rundfunk, for example, published an article about this ( see here ). Of course, no one has called for the abolition of private pet ownership.

A provocative comment entitled “Let’s get rid of the mutts!” in the newspaper “Neues Deutschland” ( we reported ) brought it to a head. However, the author of this commentary is Katharina Schwirkus. Annalena Baerbock has absolutely nothing to do with this article.
