(Göttingen). Tonight, the police searched a total of twelve properties as part of a major operation and took two suspects into custody.

- Search of 12 objects in the Göttingen (11) and North Hesse (1) areas - Special focus on preventing specific attack plans - 450 police forces on duty - Two perpetrators taken into custody - Further investigations are ongoing

The measures to avert danger focused on the radical Islamist scene in Göttingen. In addition to the 11 affected properties in the Göttingen city area, another one in northern Hesse was the focus of the searches.

“In view of the radical Islamist scene in Göttingen, the knowledge base in the run-up to the operation regarding a potentially imminent terrorist attack has increased to such an extent in recent days that we have decided, based on coordination with the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office and the Ministry of the Interior, to act very quickly against the threat actors and those closest to them. We had no discretion in my assessment. We acted consistently using the legal instruments available to us,” said the President of the Göttingen Police Department, Uwe Lührig.

The two people classified as dangerous are a 27-year-old Algerian citizen and a 23-year-old Nigerian citizen. Both people live with their families in Göttingen. They have been part of the Salafist scene in Göttingen for a long time.

The preparation and implementation of the police operation with a force of up to 450 police officers was under the direction of the Vice President of the Göttingen Police Department, Bernd Wiesendorf. In total, emergency services from the Göttingen police department, the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office with the special operations team and the Lower Saxony riot police were involved.

The police measures are continuing.
