An 86-year-old from Neubrandenburg has become the victim of a perfidious fraud scheme that is also new to investigators in this form.

The man was visited by two men at his home address yesterday afternoon. They posed as police officers from Spain and pretended to work with the Neubrandenburg police. They arrested two people in Spain who are said to have sold the pensioner electrical equipment and a set of knives - a year and a half ago.

That's exactly true: The man from Neubrandenburg actually bought the goods in question from two men in a kind of "doorstep shop" for several hundred euros in 2018. At that time, the sellers also introduced themselves as Spaniards and stated that they wanted to sell the technology and the knife set because they could not take the items with them on the plane back to their country.

While the two alleged Spanish police officers questioned the 86-year-old victim about the purchase yesterday, they asked him to hand over the cash he had for inspection. He could pick up the notes again in the Neubrandenburg district in the evening.

The injured party gave the men over 30,000 euros in his apartment.

When he showed up at the station that evening, the fraud was discovered. According to current knowledge, the alleged police officers from yesterday were not the same men who sold goods to the victim in 2018.

The fraudsters who posed as Spanish investigators can be described as follows:

First suspect:

  • 35 – 40 years old
  • approx. 1.70 m tall
  • slim
  • black, slightly curly hair
  • short mustache
  • He wore a brown leather jacket, brown trousers and
  • dark brown leather shoes
  • neat appearance

Second suspect:

  • 35 – 40 years old
  • approx. 1.80 to 1.85 m tall
  • slim
  • black curly hair with sideburns that go down low
  • He was wearing a brown fabric jacket, dark trousers and brown trousers
  • Leather shoes
  • neat appearance

We would like to take this new scam in our area as an opportunity to strongly warn citizens never to give money to unknown people. Even if they pose as investigators from a national or international police agency.

Real police officers will never come to your doorstep and ask you for cash or valuables to take everything for further investigation. Not even if there is actually an investigation and you may have purchased items from fraudsters (e.g. stolen goods)!

Anyone who can provide further information about the matter, especially about the suspects described, or who has become a victim of such a scam themselves, should contact the operations control center by telephone at 0395/5582-2224 or the MV State Police Internet Guard at www.polizei.mvnet. de or any other police station.

The Neubrandenburg Police Department has taken over the investigation.

A fraud case was also successful in Torgelow yesterday. There, a 76-year-old woman handed over 30,000 euros to a man who posed as an official from the BKA (Federal Criminal Police Office). In this case, an alleged investigator had previously contacted the injured party by telephone in a typical manner. As is so often the case, there were warnings about a foreign gang that allegedly wanted to empty your account. To avoid this, she should withdraw the money and hand it over to the BKA for security until further notice. The man who finally picked up the money was of course not a real member of the BKA!

Here again the note: Officials, whether from the district or from the state or federal criminal investigation office, would never come to citizens and take their money (from their account or cash) for safekeeping! If you receive suspicious calls or are asked by alleged police officers to give money or valuables, please call 110 immediately and inform the (real) police on your own initiative!

The Anklam Police Department is conducting further investigations.
