In the past few days, people from Dortmund and Lünen have repeatedly reported familiar experiences to the police via emergency calls.

Have told about callers who reported serious (corona) illnesses in their daughter/son/granddaughter. It now takes a large amount of money to treat the relatives. Or people reported that police officers had come forward and warned of an impending break-in. The person called should now hand over their own valuables to the custody of the police.

What do we say to that? Beware, scammers! Don't believe them!

Do you receive a call with a story like this? Then hang up immediately! Another variant of these fraudulent calls is the story of the son/daughter who caused a fatal traffic accident. Only a high bail payment can now prevent imprisonment. A blatant lie! There's a scammer on the line. And they don't have your family's well-being in mind, they want your savings.

That's why the police warn again in this context!

  • Show a healthy level of suspicion towards unknown callers.
  • If it's about your relatives, try to reach them or other relatives yourself to find out whether something really happened to them.
  • If it is about possible crimes that you could be threatened with (break-ins, manipulation of your bank), call the real police - on the emergency number 110 - and find out whether there is actually an investigation into your person.
  • Instead of immediately believing dubious callers, choose alternative options to check the truth of such statements!

Older people are particularly affected by fraudulent calls.

No reason for the younger generations not to deal with this topic!
On the contrary: Help us in our prevention work in the fight against fraudsters and talk about these scams! In the family, among friends, with older neighbors. In these cases, knowledge is the best protection! Strengthen your older relatives and acquaintances against fraudsters! Source: Dortmund police
