The “Watchlist Internet” is currently reporting on a new scam in which fraudsters pretend to be Amazon employees over the phone and claim that your Amazon account has been hacked.

These people tell you that there are suspicious orders on your account and offer to cancel them and protect your account. In reality, however, it is a scam .

The fraudsters are trying to get your money, copies of your ID and login details for your Amazon account. Therefore, be careful when you receive such a call and never give out any personal information without verifying the identity of the person on the other end of the line.

This is how the “Amazon” scam works:

  1. Your phone rings and there is supposedly an Amazon employee on the other end.
  2. This person tells you that unusual orders have been detected in your Amazon account and it appears that your account has been hacked.
  3. In order to stop the suspicious orders that are worth 500 euros or more, Amazon allegedly put them on hold and did not fulfill them. Therefore, you can't see them in your account - or so they claim.
  4. Now your account should be secured and the orders permanently deleted. The person on the phone offers you help. You will be asked to download remote maintenance software such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. The download gives the fraudsters access to your device.
  5. You will then be asked to log in to your Amazon account, which will allow the fraudsters to intercept your login details. You will then be asked to log in to your bank account. The perpetrators then try to trick you into releasing payments by making false claims. They often also ask for copies of ID cards or photos of credit cards.

I have fallen victim to this scam – what action can I take?

  • As soon as you discover that you have authorized payments or shared banking information, contact your bank immediately. With a bit of luck, it is possible to get the transferred amounts back.
  • Have your credit card blocked immediately if you have sent a picture of it.
  • Change your passwords immediately.
  • Uninstall the programs installed on your device. There is a risk that the perpetrators have smuggled in spy software. In this case, you should completely reset your device.
  • Inform Amazon about the attempted fraud. Send your review to [email protected] .
  • Report it to the police.
