Hagen – Two people from Hagen fell victim to fraudulent promises of winnings. On July 14th, an unknown person called a 64-year-old man from Halden and told him that he had won 40,000 euros in a competition. An employee would contact him in a few days about handing over the money.

This was the case last Monday and when we contacted him again by telephone, the caller initially demanded a processing fee of 900 euros from the 64-year-old. After this amount was transmitted, another demand for money came, this time in a four-digit amount, as the winning amount was actually significantly higher and therefore a higher insured sum had to be deposited. This seemed suspicious to the injured party and he reported the incident to the police. Of course he didn't win anything and the 900 euros are gone.

In the second case it was on July 13th. a 38-year-old from Hohenlimburg was the victim of a similar scam. First she should transfer 200 euros to set up an account, only then can you send her the 48,000 euros she has won. This amount was supposedly needed as security and would be transferred back a short time later.

After the repayment was made, the injured party believed that the promise of winnings was legitimate and she paid 3,000 euros a short time later by cash transfer. They are now gone and the 38-year-old filed a complaint. In both cases, the fraudsters made a credible and serious impression on their victims and allayed their concerns. Time and time again, unsuspecting people are able to get their money out of their pockets.

The police therefore advise: show a healthy level of suspicion.
