On January 18, 2022 at around 12:30 p.m., a 72-year-old man was contacted by telephone by an alleged correctional service employee and asked for a payment in an alleged ongoing case.

To do this, he was instructed to press number one on his phone to get more information.
The person called hung up immediately and did not fall for the scam. At around 12:45 p.m., a 31-year-old woman was called by a supposed insurance representative from the “statutory health insurance company” and asked about her job. The caller promised the lady a cash bonus from her supplementary dental insurance. The person called ended the call and immediately contacted her real insurance company.

The goal of the callers is the same in all cases:

They urge those called to hand over or transfer cash, cryptocurrencies, gold or jewelry or to use toll telephone services!

Our tips!

  • The police warn urgently against disclosing information about cash and valuables over the phone!
  • Stay suspicious! Never let anyone ask you about your assets over the phone!
  • Never give your valuables for safekeeping to strangers who, for example, pretend to be employees of authorities or insurance companies!
  • Never spend money to claim a supposed prize, pay any fees or dial special toll numbers (special toll numbers, for example, begin with the area code: 0900…, 0180…, 0137…).
  • Do not make any promises over the phone.
  • Never give out personal information: telephone numbers and addresses, account details, sort codes, credit card numbers or similar.
  • Reject unjustified demands for money.
  • Don't let yourself be put under pressure on the phone! Don't give the scammers a chance and just hang up the phone! This is the only way to get rid of scammers.
  • And if you have received such a call, be sure to contact the police and file a report.
