Eschwege - Last Friday, July 14, 2017, the Werra-Meißner police department managed to arrest a 30-year-old from Bremen, who was arrested by officers from the MEK Kassel while handing over money.

This was preceded by a call from an alleged police chief inspector Schulz on the afternoon of July 12, 2017, who contacted an older couple (74 and 78 years old) in Eschwege by telephone. Following the usual ploy, the caller mentioned the arrest of a couple where, in addition to stolen goods, a list of names - including the names of the couple - was found. Since you were obviously the target of burglars, the fake police officer asked about valuables, such as cash and jewelry. Among other things, the telephone number “01110” appeared on the display. The caller initially managed to credibly convey that it was actually a police officer.

In the course of further telephone calls, he increasingly demanded that available money be collected from a credit institution and handed over. At this stage, the couple behaved completely correctly by informing the “real” police. The officers from the responsible Commissariat 20 of the criminal police took over the investigation and “directed” the further calls from the alleged inspector. Last Friday morning, a handover of money was arranged in the area of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße/Moritz-Werner-Straße in Eschwege, which led to the aforementioned arrest. In this context, traffic controls were also carried out between 12:40 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. in the “Weidenhäuser Kreuz” and “Hoheneicher Rondell” areas.

The 30-year-old did not provide any information to the police; an arrest warrant was applied for against him, which was subsequently issued.

The exemplary behavior of the couple concerned should once again be expressly praised, as they recognized the fraud in a timely manner and also informed the police.

The Werra-Meißner Police Department would therefore like to once again point out the following prevention tips:

  • do not disclose any personal information or information about living conditions
  • never provide information about valuables (in the apartment)/assets - police officers do not ask about personal hiding places of money
  • Likewise, police officers do not seize cash or other valuables as a precaution
  • If you feel under pressure during the phone call, end the conversation and inform the local police/inquire - Do not give valuables to strangers
  • The police never call 110 or similar numbers - as in the case above.
