What happened: In March 2022, a 66-year-old man was doing internet research and came across a provider who promised him a share profit. In order to open a deposit, the injured party transferred money to the unknown perpetrator for the first time. In the following days and weeks, the injured party received regular calls from the perpetrator and was informed about the alleged status of his shares. Then the 66-year-old German received an email with a payment request so that his winnings could be paid out to him. Again he transferred the requested amount. Little by little, the man lost almost 15,000 euros before he noticed the fraud and filed a criminal complaint with the police.
A woman, also 66, received a message from a mobile phone number she did not recognize on May 11, 2022 via the messenger service “WhatsApp”. In this message, the sender pretended to be the victim's daughter and said that this was her new cell phone number. The alleged daughter later asked the 66-year-old German to transfer 750 euros to pay a bill. The 66-year-old transferred the money. On May 12, 2022, she was contacted again via “WhatsApp” and even transferred an amount of 2,890 euros. This scam isn't new either, but the woman still lost around 3,500 euros before she realized that her real daughter didn't have a new cell phone number and didn't need any money from her. She also ultimately filed a criminal complaint.
Fraud: In both cases, the criminal police are now taking over further investigations.
the police advise once again: Be skeptical if you receive messages from unknown numbers on your cell phone, especially if the senders pose as close relatives and ask for money or transfers after a short conversation. In such cases, always contact your relatives by telephone using the numbers you know and inquire personally whether a phone number change has actually taken place. This makes it easy to expose the fraud!
If in doubt, always call the police on 110 and report any fraud attempts that are noticed in good time. Also talk to neighbors, acquaintances and older people around you about this and similar scams.
