On April 23, 2021, the Schmalkalden-Meiningen police station informed about a new scam. Citizens of the district are called by a supposed doctor from the HELIOS Clinic in Meiningen.

This then pretends that an immediate relative in the hospital is fighting for his life due to a serious CoViD-19 illness and urgently needs medication. However, this medication would have to be paid for before treatment, otherwise the relative would die.

Here, the currently unknown fraudsters are trying to exploit the current uncertainties in an extremely reprehensible way and obtain a large sum of money. They usually ask for 15,000 – 25,000 euros over the phone.

Currently, 52 citizens of the district have already reported to the police, with whom the fraudsters tried their luck. According to current knowledge, no financial loss occurred.

An 80-year-old citizen from Einhausen almost fell for this trick. However, this was prevented by an attentive employee from VR-Bank in Meiningen. When the 80-year-old wanted to withdraw a large amount of cash, she “smelled the roast” and informed the police.

The investigation into the attempted fraud is ongoing.
