The claim

It is claimed that Bill Gates said in 2016: “Vaccination is the best way to reduce population.”

Our conclusion

There is no evidence that Bill Gates ever made such a statement. The claim is based on a misunderstanding of his actual statements.

Quotes are often shared on the Internet. But these are often taken out of context or misinterpreted. Bill Gates' alleged quote that vaccinations are the best way to reduce population is a prime example of such a persistent misunderstanding.

Bill Gates Quote Rumors/Claims

This hoax arose from an interpretation of a 2010 TED Talk

Evaluation

The claim that Gates described vaccinations as a means of population reduction is misleading and false. There is no direct evidence for such a quote.

The facts

In fact, Gates talked about the connection between vaccinations, healthcare and population growth in his TED Talk. His thesis is that improved health conditions, including vaccinations, can lead to families having fewer children because the children's chances of survival increase. This argument is based on observations that parents in regions with high child mortality tend to have more children.

Conclusion

Gates also explained this connection in a 2009 open letter and in a CNN interview . He stressed that better health care, including vaccinations, can lead to lower child mortality and therefore slower population growth - an effect known as demographic transition.
