BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin on the start of the vaccination: Does he not want to get himself and his employees vaccinated because he is skeptical about his own vaccine?

Paper is patient, and so are sharepics on social media. Did BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin actually say that he does not want to have his employees or himself vaccinated? Does he assume that he and his employees could become ill if they get vaccinated?

At least this information is currently being spread on social media. There is even a source in which he is said to have claimed this. The following image is being spread on social media:

BIONTECH CHIEF UGUR SAHIN
LIVE INTERVIEW, ARD EXTRA 12/21/20

“NO, ME AND MY EMPLOYEES WILL NOT BE VACCINATED IN 2021.

WE NEED TO PRODUCE 1.3 BILLION VACCINE DOSES. WE CANNOT AFFORD ANY (ILLNESS-RELATED) FAILURES.”

These statements appear in the form of a sharepic, which is distributed via messenger and social media platforms. But does BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin really have doubts about his own vaccine?

BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin and vaccination: The fact check!

The sharepic cites a live interview from ARD-Extra as the source of these two sentences. According to the company's own information, this was broadcast on December 21, 2020. There is currently no link to this interview here.

But it doesn't matter, because we picked out this interview for you and watched it too. Thanks also go to ARD, who made it possible to embed this video. So it's not a secret interview with a statement that needs to be covered up. We therefore ask you to follow this interview yourself:

We find the crucial question at the end of this interview. We transcribed BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin's answer for this fact check. Sahin definitely says that he wants to get vaccinated:

Yes, we, of course I would like to get vaccinated too. We just have to make sure that we follow the legal principles. We will have to produce over 1.3 billion vaccine doses in the next 12 months, it is important that no employees are lost and therefore [we?] are thinking about finding a way that legally allows us to use our employees protect. But we have, this is currently still being clarified.

The statement that he does not want to get himself and his employees vaccinated is therefore incorrect. BioNTech boss Sahin only says that he has to adhere to the legal rules and cannot simply get vaccinated. Just like his employees, to whom he cannot simply give a vaccination dose, even if he would like to. Because it is precisely WITH this vaccination that he can ensure that his employees are not absent.

Sahin not only made this statement to ARD, but can also be followed in parallel in other media. The Sächsische Zeitung also provides an answer to the question about vaccination:

“But we would like to do that as soon as we have the appropriate basis for it,” he said. “It is important for us that we provide our production employees with appropriate vaccine doses.” The aim is to ensure uninterrupted production of vaccines in Biontech’s production network over the next twelve months.

His statement was also repeated in an interview with RTL Yes, he wants to get vaccinated. And he also wants to create an opportunity for his employees. Nevertheless, he sees himself as dependent on the legal rules:

No, not yet. We don't have approval for Germany yet. But as soon as she's there, I would of course like to do it. However, we also adhere to the guidelines for which groups of people the vaccine is intended for first, and we do not make any exceptions for ourselves. If we have an opportunity to vaccinate employees because they do systemically important work, then we would of course do it very quickly and very happily.

The Sharepic deliberately distorts the BioNTech boss's information so that the opposite of his statement is spread. It is simply a lie that BioNTech boss Ugur Sahin does not want to get himself and his employees vaccinated.

The sharepic intentionally misrepresents the meaning. This is that he doesn't want to vaccinate his employees because then they would get sick. However, this statement is incorrect. In comparison with the other interviews, it becomes clear that he wants to have them vaccinated so that they don't get sick with Covid-19.
