Secret Blacklist: Facebook has identified 968 groups that can be classified as “militant social movements.”

The identified groups are part of a larger company blacklist of dangerous people and organizations. Who exactly is on this list was previously top secret. The US non-profit news site “ The Intercept ” has now published the complete internal list and is calling for more transparency from the social media market leader.

“Unpredictable system”

“For many years, Facebook has banned its users from freely expressing themselves about people and groups that glorify violence in order to refute allegations that they are helping terrorists spread their propaganda,” says The Intercept’s report on the blacklist. The restrictions would date back to 2012, when a broader debate sparked in the U.S. Congress and the United Nations about the online recruiting practices of terrorist organizations.

Since then, the controls Facebook uses to keep inappropriate content off its pages have evolved into an "unpredictable system" whose exact workings are intentionally not communicated to the outside world. This lack of transparency poses a great risk that certain groups and communities will be censored, punished and personal freedoms restricted. “Many legal experts have therefore already called for the group to publish its internal blacklist,” the report says.

4,000 individuals and groups on blacklist

Facebook has always vehemently rejected such requests. The reason for this is that the company would be concerned about the well-being of its own employees if all the names on the list were made public. “But they didn’t want to give us more detailed information about possible threat scenarios,” emphasize the authors of “The Intercept.”

The internal document published by the US news site lists more than 4,000 people and groups. These include the names of many politicians and well-known personalities such as writers and musicians, but also charities, hospitals and historical figures who have been no longer alive for a long time.
