Even though vegetarians and vegans have some very good arguments against eating meat, meat suppliers have not yet had much to complain about.

But in order to be able to provide enough meat, what one would apparently think is a supposedly new method is required: According to a video circulating on Facebook, cows are said to have been supplied with genetically modified grain and growth hormones in order to be more like a wrestling match. Ring to fit into a cowshed. Hulk Hogan cows through genetic feed or maybe something else?

In English the status is:

“That’s what these PIEEEPS give us to eat? What the heck, is this really evidence about a cow that was fed GM feed and injected with growth hormones… Anyone want McDonalds??”

...followed by unrelated hashtags and advertising for a YouTube channel and an Instagram account.

Is the video real?

So real that you'd think Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had an affair with a pretty cow. In fact, this isn't a tricked out video, this breed of cow really exists.

Cow breed?

Correct. Because we are not dealing here with a genetically modified cow, but rather with a genetic defect in the so-called “Belgian Blue” cow breed , which was first observed . This breed has a natural gene mutation that causes the muscles to grow uninhibited.

Are these cows bred for food?

In principle yes, that is the basic idea why this breed of cow continues to be bred. However, there are not only advantages from this.

These cows have a greatly increased feed requirement, can only be artificially inseminated and have to give birth by caesarean section due to the smaller birth canal. The cows' stables must also be modernized accordingly, because this breed is extremely sensitive to cold and has to grow longer before it is ready for slaughter. Even if the meat of these cows is popular due to the low fat content of the meat, the costs for these cows outweigh the return. Although they look impressive in a pasture, they do not represent any real benefit for a breeder.

Conclusion:

Yes, these cows exist. But no, they were not created by genetically modified food and growth hormones, but rather by a genetic mutation at least 200 years ago. They are also bred for consumption, but are currently not particularly profitable.

“The Rock” and Monsanto have already been acquitted as being responsible for this breed of cow. Whether it is really great to continue breeding that gene mutation is another matter. At least morally it is certainly questionable.
