In well-organized call centers, mostly abroad, they systematically search phone books and files for old first names that they suspect are seniors who are easy to defraud.

In the last few days, several attempted frauds have been reported in Oberhausen in which callers pretended to be employees of the Stadtsparkasse or a bank who allegedly needed the called party's debit card for security reasons. Other employees would have to pick up the card at home.
In one case (May 8, 2023), the person called (92) informed a neighbor she knew just in time, thus preventing something worse from happening. In another case, a 90-year-old woman from Oberhausen only called her confidant on the same day after handing over her debit card to a fraudster. In the meantime, the perpetrator was already able to withdraw money without authorization.
A day later (May 9, 2023), the alleged savings bank employee Mr. Steinbach kept an 85-year-old Oberhausen woman busy with a phone call until an accomplice was able to ring the doorbell at her apartment door and take the lady's debit card. Withdrawals were then made from their account.
The police warn
The head of the Oberhausen Fraud Commissioner appeals to children and grandchildren:
“Warn your parents and grandparents now. If pressured on the phone, just hang up. That’s not rude.”

After such a phone call, the affected seniors should immediately call the telephone numbers of their children or trusted people, which are clearly visible and easy to find, and inform them about the incident.
From the point of view of Chief Detective Böhringer, it is also desirable to report the matter to the police so that other seniors can be warned quickly.
