A video of burning tires keeps circulating, along with the claim that they were exported from Germany to Africa. However, this is wrong!

When it comes to environmental protection, people often point fingers at others as an argument: “ But look at what they’re doing .” A good example is a short video that shows burning tires in a large tire cemetery, because the video was allegedly made in Africa and the tires were supposedly exported from Germany to Africa to be disposed of there.

Here is a screenshot of a Facebook post with the video:

The text displayed in the video reads: “ While the combustion engine is being phased out in Germany, the used tires are being disposed of professionally in Africa .” This and other Facebook posts also claim that the tires come from Germany.

The origin of the video

In August 2021, the video was distributed in various lengths and still photos in the press and on YouTube . But the video is older: it was made at the end of April 2021 .

On April 30, Ahmad Al Hadian, a member of the Kuwait City Council, tweeted several photos of the fire, including the exact fire seen in the video:

In the tweet, Ahmad Al Hadian writes that he had already warned in October 2020 about the consequences of the "complacency and stupidity" brought about by the car cemetery in Salmi, Kuwait , now we see the result of the inaction of the community responsible for surveillance and tracking the tire transfers.

As a news site in Kuwait reported (see HERE ), the fire broke out on April 29th at the tire cemetery containing 60 million tires . As with some previous fires, it was arson and it took the fire department seven hours to put out the fire.

Why are there so many tires in Kuwait?

In the 1980s and 1990s, Kuwait made a business of importing scrap tires from other countries, importing 259 million scrap tires annually from the United States and Europe until the practice was banned by Kuwait's government .

Tires have not been exported from Germany for years, and since 2003 the landfilling of used tires has been banned in this country. Instead, used tires are recycled or burned in special ovens in a controlled manner, but unfortunately there are still illegal tire warehouses.

Summary

The video does not come from Africa, but from Kuwait. In addition, the tires are not burned for disposal there, but, like some previous fires, were ignited by arson. If there are tires from Germany there, this was several years ago; Kuwait banned the import of tires in 2001.
