The claim

A video is supposed to show in two places how supposedly dead people move in Butscha . A body appears to raise its hand to wave as the car is about to pass, another body appears to straighten up, seen in the rearview mirror.

Our conclusion

No, the alleged corpse that raises its arm in Butscha is a drop of water on the windshield , the corpse standing up is a distortion in the rearview mirror .

A car drives through Bucha in Ukraine, the street is filmed from the passenger side. Everywhere you look, you can see corpses lying carelessly on the street. The video was shared countless times on social media. But the video supposedly shows that there are no real corpses lying there: one body appears to raise its hand to wave as the car is about to drive past, another body appears to straighten itself up in the rearview mirror. But in a higher resolution version of the video, it's easy to see that the claims are false.

The claims

The claims first appeared on a Telegram channel called “ Война с фейками ” (in German: The War on Counterfeits) on April 3:

Butscha: The claims about the video on Telegram
The claims about the video on Telegram

There it is claimed that the images appeared in several foreign publications at the same time and that it was a planned media campaign. At 12 seconds the arm of a corpse should move, at 30 seconds you would see a corpse sitting up in the rearview mirror. The corpses were also arranged on the street in this way to make the scene appear more dramatic.

The Telegram post also contains a 21-second video that shows the relevant excerpts in slow motion to support the claims. The Russian Defense Ministry also shared the claims on Telegram . Here are screenshots of the relevant places:

The fact check

Two hours before the slow-motion video with the allegations was distributed on Telegram, it also appeared in a longer and, above all, better version on TSN.ua's Telegram channel . So let's take another look at the scenes in question with clearer images.

From second 9 onwards you can see the man more clearly as he lies on the street. He has no arm lying on the ground; the reflection of his body can be seen on the wet street:

Butscha: No arm on the ground
No arm on the ground

The body remains motionless, but what can be seen: a white dot that moves from bottom to top.

Butscha: A white dot? A raindrop!
A white dot? A raindrop!

The road is wet with rain, there are several raindrops on the windshield. So what looks like a hand raising in the blurry video is actually just a raindrop on the windshield. The man doesn't have his arm on the ground at all, so he can't lift it either.

This is shown graphically in a video on Twitter : Color inversion shows that the white dot is not a hand, but a drop of water:

Let's move on to the corpse rising up in the rearview mirror. The widely circulated video only shows half of the body as it is obscured by the news channel's banner before it appears in the rearview mirror:

The body can be seen better in the video from TSN:

Butscha: The photo of the body is in slightly better quality and is completely visible
The body image is slightly better quality and completely visible

This also shows that there are also photos of the body. A very clear photo of the body can be seen on GettyImages (see HERE ), it was taken on April 3rd. In the GettyImages image, the yellow and blue packaging can no longer be seen in the image above, but the body is still there unchanged.

Photographer Mikhail Palinchack also photographed the body from a different perspective and posted the photo on Instagram (see HERE ). He states that he took the photos on April 2nd, and his yellow and blue packaging is still next to it. In his photo, the corpse is still lying in exactly the same position.

What is interpreted as movement in the milliseconds in the rearview mirror is simply the typical distortion of the rearview mirror:

MIMIKAMA
The body lies there unchanged

What was identified as his torso in the blurry video is actually the man's legs. Due to the distortion of the rearview mirror (also clearly visible in the white and red house in the background), the body looks wider just a few milliseconds later, which is misinterpreted as movement in the blurred version.

Conclusion

The claims made by the Telegram page “The War on Counterfeits,” which were also shared by the Russian Defense Ministry, are false. The supposed corpse raising its arm is a drop of water on the windshield, the corpse standing up is a distortion in the rearview mirror.

Despite the overwhelming number of photos from Bucha, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation continues to claim that the photos and videos are a “provocation of the regime in Kiev.”

Twitter sees the tweet as a violation of Twitter's rules on abusive behavior, but is leaving it visible due to public interest.

Not a real video from Ukraine, but a helicopter scene from “Arma 3”
