Whether on a smartphone, computer or console: children and young people in Germany like to spend their free time gaming. 89 percent of 10 to 18 year olds play video and computer games and spend an average of two hours and 29 minutes per day doing so - on weekends the figure is significantly higher. This is the result of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 641 children and young people in Germany between the ages of ten and 18.

Video and computer games have finally arrived in children's rooms

Accordingly, 70 percent play for more than an hour a day, 15 percent play between a quarter of an hour and only five percent play a maximum of a quarter of an hour a day.

“Games are an integral part of the everyday lives of many children and young people. It is important to practice regular use of video and computer games. Parents should agree on a weekly time budget with their children or set a daily maximum limit, especially for young children.”

Dr. Bernhard Rohleder, Bitkom general manager

The older, the more gaming time

Younger gamers spend slightly less time playing video and computer games than older ones. Children between the ages of ten and twelve play an average of around two hours per day (119 minutes) and young people aged 13 and over play around 2.75 hours a day - 13 to 15 year olds play an average of 165 minutes and 16 to 18 year olds play 164 minutes. There are hardly any differences between boys and girls: while nine out of ten boys (90 percent) play, the figure is eight out of ten (81 percent) among girls. However, with an average of two hours and 42 minutes a day, boys play over half an hour longer than girls, who spend an average of two hours and eight minutes a day playing video or computer games.

Note on methodology

The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. 641 children and young people between the ages of 10 and 18 were surveyed. The survey is representative. The questions were: “Do you play video or computer games?” and “How much time do you spend on average per day in your free time playing video or computer games?”
