People tell us their stories. People send us their “My Corona Story” (sic!)

Here is my very short story:

In December 2020, I completely lost my sense of taste and smell within 1 minute while cooking. When I tasted it, I was initially unsure whether I had already seasoned the Bolognese sauce, then I quickly realized that I neither smelled nor tasted anything.

A test on the mustard tube and sterilium confirmed the suspicion. It must have caught me, like 3/4 of the rest of the hospital staff.

As a physiotherapist you have at least 20 minutes of close contact with patients; they did not have to wear masks at the time (Switzerland, Canton of Bern). Shortly before the end of a treatment, a patient said that she had to go for a test after me. The result was positive a few days before my stove incident.

The sense of smell is still working even after 11 months

The rest is quickly told. There were no other symptoms of illness. The sense of taste came back after about 4 weeks, the sense of smell is still working after 11 months.

  • Odors are there for 1-2 seconds, then gone again
  • Some phantom smells persisted for 10 days to 3 weeks: fecal smell or burnt diesel were the most unpleasant.
  • Onions smell different now
  • If someone has done their big business in the toilet, I smell a completely new smell that cannot be defined
  • I don't smell anything burning (e.g. from a pan).
  • To this day I can't eat boiled eggs without gagging
  • etc.
