Corona reporting requirement for pets planned

Berlin. Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) is planning to make reporting compulsory for corona infections in pets. It has been shown that “certain animal species are also susceptible to Sars-CoV-2,” says the draft regulation. The reporting obligation is aimed at veterinarians, authorities and other testing centers. The aim is to research infection routes and other questions. According to the WHO, there is currently no evidence that pets transmit the virus to humans...

The fact check

Yes, Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner, together with the director of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute for Animal Health, Prof. Dr. Thomas C. Mettenleiter, presented the draft of such a regulation in Berlin.

As argrarheute reports, Covid-19 infections (SARS-CoV-2) in pets should be reported. It is now known that cats and dogs can also become infected with the virus. In infection experiments, ferrets and golden hamsters were also infected with the pathogen. The symptoms were very different. Pigs, chickens and ducks have not yet been infected.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), SARS-CoV-2 infections are considered an “emerging disease” and call on OIE members to report cases in animals in order to gain further knowledge on susceptible animal species and the associated species to research occurring symptoms or possible interactions between humans, animals and the environment.

The reporting obligation is intended to record positive coronavirus findings from all animals kept by humans, including zoo animals and all wild-hoofed animals kept in enclosures for the purpose of producing meat for human consumption. If a positive case is known to a veterinary examination office, animal health authority, other public and private examination bodies and also veterinarians, they are obliged to report this to the responsible authority.

Conclusion:

The Federal Council has a draft of a planned regulation on the obligation to report corona cases in pets. This was aimed at veterinarians, authorities and other examination bodies.

When and whether the reporting requirement will ultimately come into force is still unclear.
