Imagine that in a country known for its technological sophistication and economic strength, eight out of ten companies have fallen victim to cyber attacks. This is not fiction, but reality in Germany, as a recent study by Kaspersky, a leading IT security specialist, shows. 81 percent of German companies have been attacked by cyber criminals at least once in the past two years, and 65 percent have been attacked several times. This alarming trend highlights the lack of expertise and tools in the German corporate landscape to defend against these digital threats.

The lack of internal resources

The study highlights a significant gap in the internal handling of cyber security. 61 percent of companies surveyed do not have the necessary expertise and tools to manage their cyber security. This is forcing 58 percent of companies to expand their workforce and motivating 35 percent to increase their investments in cybersecurity. These figures are not only worrying, but also highlight the need for a more comprehensive and effective strategy to deal with cyber risks and cyber attacks.

Automation and outsourcing as possible solutions

Ivan Vassunov, VP Corporate Products at Kaspersky, highlights that automation and outsourcing of cybersecurity tasks are essential measures to address the shortage of professionals and overwork. In fact, 81 percent of IT security experts surveyed complained of at least one IT security incident in the past two years, with almost half of these incidents being classified as serious or very serious. These findings highlight how critical it is to view cyber security not just as an IT matter, but as a key business challenge.

Investing in security technologies against cyber attacks

Companies are looking to strengthen their cyber security measures. A third plan to purchase additional tools for more effective cyber security management, while 36 percent aim to implement “threat detection” and “prevention protocols”. Almost half of companies (43 percent) plan to invest in outsourcing their cyber security in the next year and a half, with a quarter planning to use professional external services.

Conclusion: An urgent need for action

This study highlights the urgency for German companies to rethink and strengthen their cyber security strategies. Given the increasing frequency and severity of cyberattacks, it is critical to invest in advanced security solutions, expertise and training. Protecting against cyber threats is no longer optional, but a necessary condition for the long-term success and security of any business.
