Fraudsters promise a mobile version of the gaming blockbuster and steal user data

Cyber gangsters are trying to use the popularity of the video game “Cyberpunk 2077,” released in December, for phishing attacks. The security company SonicWall has discovered several false download sources that promise the game as a mobile app, even though it is only available on PC and consoles.

The fake verification process for the download pages only serves the criminals to steal players' personal data.

“Too good to be true”

“If an offer like this sounds too good to be true, it usually isn’t. Users must first research whether a deal is really legitimate. If you Google it, you will quickly find out that there is no mobile version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Passing on personal data such as account passwords to cyber criminals is becoming increasingly dangerous because more and more information is connected digitally.

warns Thomas Uhlemann, security specialist at ESET , in an interview with pressetext.

The fake downloads are promoted on both websites and YouTube videos. The ads claim that the apps available are versions of Cyberpunk 2077 for smartphones.

However, before apparently downloading, users must answer questions to authenticate themselves. Through this survey, the cyber gangsters want to gain access to various data and then sell it.

Mobile version unlikely

Alleged instructions for downloading Cyberpunk 2077 can be found on YouTube. The links contained in the videos also lead to phishing sites. According to SonicWall, neither the websites nor the videos are, in and of themselves, harmful.

However, it is dangerous to give personal information to scammers. Cyberpunk 2077 is only available on PC and home consoles. Because the game, which was hotly anticipated before its launch, is very extensive and is still struggling with various technical problems, a mobile version is very unlikely.
