As the Federal Criminal Police Office in Austria and “FUNK from Germany currently report,” children’s social lives now take place on TikTok. But in addition to dance and animal videos, there is also very dangerous content here: young people and children trivialize drugs, film themselves while intoxicated, give tips on the “best” way to use drugs and also initiate deals, while the music in the background glorifies drugs.

The algorithms of the video app TikTok increase access to the drug scene and the platform does not do enough to prevent it from reaching children. This is what research into the NDR format STRG_F suggests

Anyone who wants to order drugs will probably always find a way. But: Many very young people are reached on TikTok who apparently had no previous contact with drugs (at least that's what the comments read).

The videos show people tripping, with huge pupils and text glorifying drugs. The hashtags and words are exchanged regularly. This makes it difficult for TikTok to filter the content. FUNK researched and after researching, some of the videos we exposed to TikTok were deleted.

A drug scene has developed on TikTok that already appeals to children. They appear intoxicated with huge pupils. Some clips get thousands or tens of thousands of likes. Minors not only exchange their experiences on TikTok, but they also get access to synthetic narcotics. The scene revolves primarily around ecstasy, but speed, crystal meth and heroin are also consumed. “It's really triggering when you see people there who have big pupils or who talk about it,” says a 17-year-old consumer. The reporters Isabell and Désirée observe how the young people openly network with dealers on the platform and do a self-experiment: How easy is it to get narcotics here? And how is it possible that this scene is so big on TikTok?

Safer Use:
There is no risk-free consumption of narcotics and you should wait before consuming them, especially at a young age when the brain is still developing. If you still want to consume it, you should find out about the effects, risks and consequences beforehand. This is the only way to make a conscious consumer decision – or a conscious one against it. Adhering to safe use rules helps ensure that you do not harm yourself more when consuming than the substance itself.

Legal:
In Germany, the possession, cultivation and trafficking of illegal drugs such as cannabis, LSD, ecstasy, cocaine or heroin is punishable by law and can, under certain circumstances, lead to long prison sentences. (§29 Narcotics Act). Narcotics Act: https://dejure.org/gesetze/BtMG
