On Sunday I sat comfortably in a café again. Of course, I also went to the toilet once in a while. Lost in thought, I looked at the wall and saw the object of irritation: a roll of toilet paper that had been placed “wrong side up” in the holder.

I'm the kind of person who believes that toilet paper shouldn't hang along the wall. On the one hand, this isn't particularly great for me for hygiene reasons, but on the other hand, it just looks stupid. I agree. But I know that there are of course different views around the world.

Nevertheless, I am also sure that in the end I will be able to actually substantiate my point of view to some extent. Because I have often seen the screenshot on social media that shows a very specific drawing of a toilet paper holder. And I'm sure this shows quite clearly how the roll should be placed in the holder.

Fact check toilet paper and the holder

And I actually found a corresponding article in our archive (in the endless expanses of the Mimikama archive). Lo and behold, there is this patent and also this sketch drawing of the toilet paper holder. In this previous article we describe that there is actually a patent for the toilet paper roll. The perforated version of the paper was patented in 1891 under the number “US 465588 A” ( see here ).

The illustration for this patent not only shows the patenting of the tear-off toilet paper, but is ultimately also trend-setting. And that literally! Because in the illustration we also see the suspended state of the roll, as it was painted on when it was patented (albeit as an accessory).

Did you know that the toilet paper patent is almost 127 years old?

It comes from New York businessman Seth Wheeler in 1891. And clomo ensures that there are no bottlenecks for you:

And with a smile on my face, I will continue to ensure that all toilet paper rolls have the “correct” unrolling direction until their bitter end and are not painfully torn off along a wall.
