Get a reminder from Avarto on behalf of Amazon even though you didn't order anything? There is data theft behind this!

In recent weeks, there has been an increasing number of complaints from Brandenburg consumers who have been asked by post by Arvato Payment Solutions GmbH to settle supposedly outstanding invoices with the online retailer Amazon. The invoices are genuine even though the consumers have not ordered anything. You have become a victim of data theft. The consumer advice center advises: “Act immediately and contact the sender!”

“In principle, it is of course possible that a customer has actually overlooked the settlement of a legitimate invoice. The consumer should then pay the claim immediately,” said Dr. Katarzyna Trietz, chief lawyer at the Brandenburg Consumer Center. These days, however, more and more consumers are receiving mail who either do not have an Amazon account or whose Amazon account does not have any outstanding claims.

“The assumption here is that fraudsters used consumers’ data to create new accounts and place orders on Amazon without paying for them.”

continued Trietz. The reminder is now being sent to unsuspecting consumers whose data has been used without their knowledge.

“We recommend contacting Amazon and Arvato Payment Solutions GmbH immediately and describing the matter. In addition, those affected should file a criminal complaint against unknown persons,” says Trietz. It cannot be ruled out that the data was also used for other dubious activities. The consumer advocate therefore advises that you critically examine other incoming mail and emails and regularly check bank accounts for unlawful debits.
