The current Democracy Index 2021 was published a few days ago. Germany and Austria rank high.

According to the latest edition of the Democracy Index published by The Economist Intelligence Unit, the decline in global democracy continued in 2020.
The annual survey, which assesses the state of democracy in 167 countries across five criteria, shows that only 8.4% of the world's population lives in a full democracy. Factors such as electoral procedures, pluralism, but also the functioning of the government, political participation, as well as democratic political culture and civil liberties are taken into account.
This year it has been shown that the overall rating of all states at 5.37 out of ten points is the lowest value since the index began in 2006. More than a third of all people live under authoritarian rule. The index continues the development of the previous year. In 2021 there were further steps backwards in democratization. This means that the percentage of people living in a democracy has continued to fall. According to the Democracy Index, well under 50% now live in a democracy. Instead, the number of states classified as authoritarian regimes has increased.

Germany and Austria are full democracies!

At the top of the list is Norway.
New Zealand is right behind it. However, the other Scandinavian countries Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark follow suit. But Germany and Austria also rank 15th and 20th in the scale as fully-fledged democracies. In addition to the full global rankings, a regional overview and a look at the key countries that have changed, this edition of the Democracy Index also asks: How big a challenge does China's political model pose to the world ?
