How much freedom of expression and tolerance is appropriate on social media? Where are the limits? Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim talks about this on her channel.

Freedom of expression in the comment columns on social media. This is often a balancing act. And we have been walking this tightrope for years. But what does an operator of a social media channel have to tolerate in the end?

What above all do those commenting have to tolerate in the end? This is a big question that Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim asked herself on her channel. A question that we have often asked ourselves internally.

On social media, many people believe that they are allowed to express their opinions freely without it being deleted, hidden or blocked. Freedom of expression is then argued. There are already two errors in this.

Not everything that is expressed is an opinion or covered by freedom of expression. The state promises that it will not interfere as long as the following framework is adhered to:

Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany
Art 5
(1) Everyone has the right to freely express and disseminate their opinions in speech, writing and images and to obtain unhindered information from generally accessible sources.
Freedom of the press and freedom of reporting through radio and film are guaranteed. A censorship does not take place. (2) These rights find their limits in the provisions of general laws, the legal provisions for the protection of young people and in the right to personal honor.

Very similar provisions apply in Austria, which can be viewed Article 10 – Freedom of Expression ECHR and Article 13 StGG

Furthermore, an opinion does not necessarily have to be left standing and unchallenged. This is something that many people believe. An expression of opinion can be contradicted by another opinion.

A very important point, however, is that the operators of social media channels can and are allowed to delete comments without any justification. The so-called freedom of expression is only guaranteed by the state. There is no law in the world that guarantees a right to a social media comment that lasts forever.

This question is the subject of the new video on maiLab that we would like to share with you. Because this video basically speaks for the number of social media channel operators.

We would therefore like to conclude by giving you our social media guidelines. In these guidelines we have formulated quite clearly how we imagine life in the comment columns on our social media channels. So it would be definitely worth taking a look at. And not just take a look at it, but also stick to it in the end. This way .
