A video is being shared on Facebook showing a diesel engine that supposedly charges electric cars.

This video is about:

The speaker in the video says:

“So that’s exactly my sense of humor. So here is an electric vehicle from the municipal utility, and here we have a diesel generator that is used to charge them, you have to look into it. You drive clean in the city and charge dirty.”

A member of our Mimikama community on Facebook has doubts about the video:

“Whoever made this video made sure that it was NOT possible to see where the generator cables lead.
Intentionally omitting (or overlooking) relevant information is a popular method used by spreaders of fake news. Edit: Apart from that, it is not clear that the unit is actually running. It is also not possible to see that the cables located there are actually connected to it. In the end, the unit could just as easily have just been parked there or it could be there for maintenance work.”

We asked around.

Of course, we also wanted to know what the unit was there for and asked the Mühlhausen municipal utility company. We were kindly given an explanation of the situation:

"Thank you for your message. We are pleased that you can help us correct these Facebook reports.

We would like to expressly point out that there is no connection between the emergency generator and the e-charging stations, which means that our emergency generator obviously does not supply our electric cars.

The emergency generator shown in the video is available to ensure our building's self-sufficiency in the event of an accident. As a certified municipal utility, we must meet these security requirements in order to be able to communicate in the event of disruptions.

To ensure security of supply even in an emergency, the emergency generator is regularly tested and maintained. The emergency generator is connected to a transformer station (not shown in the video).

Conclusion

It is an emergency power generator that is required for a certified municipal utility and is used in the event of an accident so that communication can be carried out even in the event of power disruptions.
The unit is not to charge electric vehicles!
