In a breaking news report, the EU Commission's consumer protection authority warns against a disinfectant from the manufacturer MIR 24. The hand gel can lead to health problems.

The hand disinfectant from the manufacturer MIR 24 is dangerous. The EU Commission's consumer protection authority describes the drug as “acutely toxic to the central nervous system and the eyes”.

According to Chip.de, the product went on sale in Germany until the end of October, primarily at Edeka and Marktkauf. The federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are affected.

The disinfectant was bottled in Ukraine by RPA Himresurs Limited Liability Company (LLC). The package says: “Disinfectant hand gel – Cleansing Hand Money”

These are both 50 milliliter and 100 milliliter bottles. Customers who have purchased the product will identify the problematic batch using the barcode numbers and batch number.

That would be the barcode number “4 820238 450011” and the batch number “04/27/2020, EXP04.2022” on the 50 milliliter bottles and the barcode number “4 820238 450066” and the batch number on the 100 milliliter bottles “04/27/2020, EXP04.2022”.

This is why the disinfectant is so dangerous:

The European authority writes in a press release that the product contains methanol (measured value: 65.3 percent by mass), which is acutely toxic to the central nervous system and the eyes.

In addition, the manufacturer does not mention any danger pictograms on the packaging, does not include important warnings or has a child-resistant fastening. The product cannot actually be sold.

Consumers who have purchased the product should not use it, as the excessive methanol content endangers the nervous system and can lead to blindness.

A high dose has a narcotic effect. Symptoms include headaches, weakness, nausea, dizziness and damage to the nervous system. In extreme cases, too high a dose of methanol even leads to blindness - for example, if the consumer touches their face after disinfecting their hands.

I bought the product – what should I do now?

If you have purchased the hand gel, it is best to close it tightly and keep it away from small children. It is possible to return the product in question to Edeka or Marktkauf. The purchase price will be refunded even without a receipt.
