The Deutschland Ticket must be the starting signal for the digital transformation in transport. We have to move away from paper and towards a digital ticket that can be used across all transport routes and means of transport in the future.

It's time we found the courage to forego the old and outdated instead of building expensive and inefficient parallel structures. If we don't take advantage of this opportunity now, when will we?

What we need now is: “digital only”.

A digital ticket is not only more convenient and cheaper, it also corresponds to the everyday life of the vast majority of people in Germany, for whom smartphones and, increasingly, smartwatches are their daily companions.

For the few travelers without a smartphone, a digitally readable chip card offers a way to use the Deutschland Ticket without breaking the system. Nobody should be forced to use a smartphone just to enjoy the Deutschland Ticket. But you shouldn't maintain expensive double structures at the expense of the general public because a minority depends on paper tickets.

If we do it right, the Deutschland Ticket can provide a digitalization boost for all local public transport and the entire mobility industry. For example, by enabling booking via multimodal apps, it also makes it easier to seamlessly switch to digital sharing and on-demand offers, thereby further increasing the attractiveness of public transport.
